With DeMatha’s field soaked with rain on Tuesday, April 25, the call had to be made: The JV game vs the Stags was canceled, while the varsity game was moved to Gonzaga’s home turf at Nats Academy. So although the game was DeMatha’s “Home Game” between the schools for the 2017 regular season, the Eagles would find themselves in friendly confines — and the team would take advantage.
Coach Bradley’s team wore their traditional home Purple, while DeMatha wore their home Blue. Gonzaga remained in their normal dugout at the Academy, while DeMatha used the same space they were in a few weeks ago when they got the road win versus the Eagles. But one thing was different on Tuesday: as the “Away team” the Eagles went to bat first — and scored 1 in the first and three in the second! The Eagles got a great complete game performance from ace Will Thomas ’17.

Gonzaga Eagles Varsity defeated DeMatha 4-1 thanks to a strong start. The team took an early lead in the first inning by scoring one run then followed up with three runs in the second. Will Thomas earned the win. He pitched seven innings, giving up one unearned run, four hits, striking out eight, and walking zero. Marcus Brown took the loss for DeMatha. He threw seven innings, allowing four runs, eight hits, striking out three, and walking zero.
Gonzaga Eagles Varsity had eight hits in the game. John Maloney, James Delaney, and Nick Lynch each collected multiple hits for Gonzaga Eagles Varsity. Brown led DeMatha with two hits in three at bats. DeMatha was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Peyton made the most plays with six.
The Eagles move to 10-7 overall and 8-5 in WCAC play. They host Bishop McNamara on April 28 at 4pm at Nats Academy.
