The Varsity basketball Eagles defeated Maret 77-66 on Monday, March 6 to earn the DC State Athletic Association boys’ title—their second championship in a week. The win marked the first time ever the Eagles captured both the WCAC and DCSAA titles (the DCSAA tournament began in 2013).
The victory came despite 37 points from Maret’s Luka Garza, who is 6-foot-11. “Luka started a bit slow, and we knew that wouldn’t continue all game,” senior guard Chris Lykes told the Washington Post. “So we just had to also focus on keeping the other guys in check because he gets his. He always does.” Lykes ended the game with a team-high of 24 points and was named the tournament’s MVP.

Before 2013, the WCAC Champion would face the DCIAA Champion for the “City Title”—and in 2008, Coach Turner’s Eagles won the WCAC, “City Title”, and the Alhambra championships. With the advent of the DCSAA tournament (and not just one game to determine the DC Champion), the two tournament wins last week already set the 2016-2017 Eagles apart in the school’s history. If the team can win the ACIT, they will make history again by winning three tournaments (9 playoff / tournament games in 22 days).
