One Night. Two MAPHL Titles. @Gonzaga_Hockey1 Makes History

Gonzaga’s Varsity and Varsity 2 hockey teams both won MAPHL championships on February 24 in their respective divisions—marking the first time ever that the same school won both championships in the league.

The varsity Eagles defeated Calvert Hall College High School, 2-1, for their first league championship since 2014. The game was close throughout, with the score tied 0-0 after the first period and the Eagles up 1-0 at the end of the second period, thanks to a goal from Connor Tait.

Calvert Hall scored at the beginning of the third period to tie the game at 1-1. “The whole year our main problem has been panicking in tight games,” Tait told The Washington Post. “After they came back, the most important thing was not to panic. We’ve been creating the chances, so just don’t panic.”

Here’s an excerpt from the Post article about how the Eagles pulled off the win:

“In the final 10 minutes, Gonzaga kept its cool. The Eagles slowly built attack after attack until Tait forced a save with two minutes remaining that prompted Coach Bill Slater to call timeout.
The ensuing faceoff worked to perfection as freshman Cole Vallese won the puck, Tait brushed it back to the older Vallese brother, and a rocket from the point gave Gonzaga its first title since 2014.  {WATCH THE GOAL, THE CLOCK DOWN, AND THE ALMA MATER HERE}
“Nobody on this team has won the championship. It’s surreal to give up the goal then come back to win like that,” senior forward John Cardellicchio. “It was a nervous ending but we got it done. That’s all that matters.”
