This week was jam packed with action for the varsity basketball Eagles. On February 12, the four seniors were honored on “Senior Day” before a dominating win over Good Counsel, 84-44.
After the game, Gonzaga and Gatorade surprised Coach Turner with a video presentation in the Carmody Center. Coach had been named the first Gatorade Coach of the Year at the ESPY’s in July 2016.
The video included a 3 minute production from Gatorade and 4 mins of congratulatory messages from all of coach’s former players who won DC Gatorade Player of the Year **** Click here or on the image below to watch the video and see photos from the event.
On February 14, the Eagles took on PVI in the final regular season home game of the year. After trailing by one at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles controlled the pace and dominated play the rest of the way en route to a convincing 72-57 victory. On February 16, the Eagles fell in a tough, hard-fought game at DeMatha, 82-75. But with his 23 points, Chris Lykes ’17 became Gonzaga’s all-time scoring leader (click here to see the shot that broke the 37 year old record ) — surpassing legendary Eagle big man, Tom Sluby ’80. Hall of Famer Sluby held the record with 2,069 points; Lykes now has 2,085 points on Eye Street. Sluby visited with the Eagles last week:
The Eagles finish the regular season on February 17 at Ireton. The WCAC quarterfinal (opponent TBD) will be played at Gonzaga on Friday, February 24. If the Eagles advance, the semifinals will be on Sunday, February 26 and the finals will be on Monday, February 27 — both rounds at American University.
