Congrats to the Varsity Soccer team for their win over Jesuit rival Georgetown Prep on 9/20 (and first win of the season). The Eagles won 2-0 with both goals being scored by Junior Austin Smith. Evan Stipano contributed with an assist on the second goal.
The Eagles are back in action this weekend at the Jesuit Soccer Classic which is being held this year in Denver, Colorado. They will play hosts Regis and newly ranked #1 in the country Rockhurst.
The Jesuit Classic began as just a head-to-head matchup between Rockhurst and Marquette in 1997. That lasted for four years, with the schools hosting on alternate years. According to head coach Mr. Chris Lawson, it was difficult to justify the travel time and cost for just one game. So in 2001, it was expanded to four teams.
The teams initially added were Canisius High School in Buffalo, N.Y. and Xavier High School in New York, N.Y. Unfortunately, the Classic was cancelled that year due to 9/11.
When planning began for 2002, Canisius and Xavier both dropped out and Regis and Gonzaga came in. This year marks the twelfth consecutive year of the four schools playing in the Classic.
Because Rockhurst and Marquette were the creators of the event, they continue to play each other every year in the Classic, during which all teams play two games. The Hawklets then alternate each year playing Regis or Gonzaga.
However, it’s much more than a few competitive soccer games. By traveling to a different Jesuit high school each year, or hosting other schools, the student-athletes experience how their experiences can be very different, but very similar at the same time.
One of the coolest parts of the weekend is that the visiting players stay with the host soccer players families, in this case Regis Jesuit, for the whole weekend. This cuts costs for the schools, and adds a great element of camaraderie among all of the players.
The Marquette, Rockhurst, and Gonzaga teams will fly in to Denver on Thursday and meet their host players and families before spending the night at their houses. They will then “shadow” the Regis Jesuit players during the half-day of school Friday.
