Coach Turner @ ESPYs, Named Gatorade CoY

Mr. Steve Turner, Gonzaga’s varsity basketball head coach, was recognized as the Gatorade National Coach of the Year on July 12th in Hollywood, California. Although Gatorade selects national male and female athletes of the year, this is the first time a coach was honored.  The annual Gatorade Awards presented at the ESPYs recognize those athletes who have achieved not only outstanding athletic achievement on the playing surface, but who have also displayed tremendous character off of it.

Coach Turner was chosen for this award because he has inspired so many student-athletes over his 12 years as Gonzaga’s head coach, and his 17 years overall at the school.  He has coached and mentored eight student-athletes who have been named the Gatorade D.C. Player of the Year.  His hard work and dedication to building “Men for Others” of great character, who have excelled both on and off the court, made him a slam dunk choice as the first ever Gatorade National Coach of the Year.
