The varsity baseball Eagles are on a two game winning streak after defeating Ireton on Saturday and Ryken on Tuesday. The team dropped a tough one to WCAC leading O’Connell last Thursday, but kept the Cardinals winless in WCAC play in Alexadnria, VA and won in walk-off fashion at Ryken in southern Maryland. With three big conference games this week (PVI at home – 4/21, @McN – 4/23, DM at home – 4/25), Coach Bradley’s Eagles the look to continue the momentum from last week to continue to climb in the WCAC standings.

The Gonzaga Eagles Varsity defeat Ireton after late game single, 7-3 on Saturday afternoon!
The Gonzaga Eagles Varsity and Ireton volleyed the lead five times on Saturday, but the Gonzaga Eagles Varsity came out on top for a 7-3 win on Saturday at Frank Mann Field.
The Gonzaga Eagles Varsity finally managed to grab the lead after a strong third inning. The Gonzaga Eagles Varsity scored on an RBI single by Nick Escoto off Kelley, bringing home James Delaney.
The Gonzaga Eagles Varsity were led by Brendan Gibson’s hitting. Gibson went 2-4, drove in one and scored one run. He singled in the first inning and homered in the fifth inning.
Nate Grisius got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He tossed two innings of shutout ball. Grisius struck out three, walked none and gave up two hits.
Hershey took the loss for Ireton. He lasted just three innings, walked one, struck out none, and allowed two runs.
Ireton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A single by Hajhes, scoring Corallo started the inning off. The scoreboard lit up again for Ireton when Wilder scored on a fielder’s choice.
The third spelled defeat for Ireton, as the Gonzaga Eagles Varsity grabbed the lead for good. More runners rounded the bases on an RBI double by James Delaney.
The Gonzaga Eagles Varsity scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth. In the fourth, the Gonzaga Eagles Varsity scored on a sacrifice fly by Grisius, bringing home Amari Newman.
James Delaney’s walk-off single off of Cryer boosted the Gonzaga Eagles Varsity to a 2-1 win over Ryken in 10 innings at Nats Academy on Tuesday.
James Delaney paced the Gonzaga Eagles Varsity at the plate. James Delaney went 2-4 and drove in one.
Matt Flagg recorded the win for the Gonzaga Eagles Varsity. He pitched 4 2/3 shutout innings. Flagg struck out three, walked two and gave up one hit. Gibson was the starter for the Eagles and threw a very efficient 5 1/3 innings being responsible for just one run.
Cryer couldn’t get it done on the rubber for Ryken, taking a loss. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, walked one, struck out one, and allowed one run.
After a scoreless stalemate, the Gonzaga Eagles Varsity finally got on the board with one run in the fourth. The Gonzaga Eagles Varsity scored on a sacrifice fly by Flagg.
In the sixth inning, Ryken pushed across its only run of the day on a suicide squeeze by Cameron.
Big performances by sophomores Nick Escoto and Jacob Hardney who combined for 5 hits on Tuesday and Pete Mulholland was a bulldog behind the plate catching all 10 innings.
The Varsity takes on Paul VI on Thursday, April 21st at Nats Academy in a rematch from their conference road opener back in March, which went 13 innings, and resulted in a 6-5 loss for Gonzaga.
