Jesuit Classic – MLK Weekend * Cleveland Ohio Jan. 15th -17th, 2016
Gonzaga’s Varsity team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio over MLK weekend to face some of the top high schools programs in the mid-west.
After a long day of travel they opened up with host team St Ignatius and after battling hard for the first half of the game before falling behind and eventually losing. Day two they faced Central Catholic from Pittsburgh who they outshot and came away with a 3-2 shootout victory. Jack Sanborn netted the decisive goal on the last shot of the shootout. The next game they faced the #2 ranked team in Illinois, Providence Catholic. Gonzaga took what seemed to be a commanding 3-0 lead, but unfortunately it would not hold up as Providence battled back to take the game.
Gonzaga’s final game was played versus Shattuck St Mary’s. With SSM holding on to a 1-0 lead late in the 3rd Henry Middlebrook(three goals on the weekend) found the back of the net on a play from Captain Mackie Wheeler. With the game ending tied 1-1 the teams went into a 3-man shootout which Shattuck won 1-0.
Coaches were pleased with the teams’ play, as it was high pace, high skilled hockey that the boys needed to adjust to and most of the programs they faced play a 60 plus game schedule. It was a great time had by all, which concluded with an afternoon at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
